Pedodontics-Pediatric Dentistry
Pediatric Dentistry is the department that deals with the dental treatment of children between the ages of 0-15. One of the biggest mistakes made in the presence of dental caries experienced by pediatric patients; it’s going to fall anyway. However, the age of tooth replacement, especially up to 12 years; Due to the fact that it affects the number of bacteria in the mouth, nutritional problems and relations with other systemic diseases, caries treatment of milk teeth should also be done in the direction that the physician deems appropriate. In the period of admission with pain, we experience adjustment problems, especially since pediatric patients equate pain and pain with treatment. For this reason, we recommend that the first dental examination be between the ages of 6 months and 1 year, which is the period when the teeth first begin to erupt, and regular check-ups at least every 6 months, even if there is absolutely no problem. With the protective and preventive measures we will take in this way, we will prevent the bruises that will occur; and we intervene before the problem gets too big. In addition, before the first examination, parents talk to children about their past experiences and talk that there is nothing to be afraid of, which may make patients uneasy.
The treatment process in pediatric patients proceeds somewhat differently than in adult patients. Since there are too many stimuli, we try to start the first sessions with slightly simpler treatments and try to accustom pediatric patients to the treatment process with various techniques. Even in our very compliant patients, we may experience fatigue and boredom from time to time. For this reason, the treatment process, course and planning should proceed in an order that the physician deems appropriate and that the child patient accepts. After the procedures are completed, routine controls should be performed every 3 months, 4 months and 6 months according to the risk group of the patient.
Patients who do not accept treatment, who have a very serious fear, who are young, or who have special needs may not be treated on the couch. Your doctor will decide this. After a certain point, forcing the child patient to have an operation in the chair drags the situation to a worse point and may trigger a lifelong dental phobia. At this stage, dental treatments are performed under general anesthesia in a single session, accompanied by an anesthesiologist. In addition, circumcision under general anesthesia, adenoid surgery and procedures allowed by your doctors can be performed in one go, together with dental treatments.
As pediatric dentists, one of the other issues we care about is early orthodontic treatments. Orthodontic interventions during the growth period; It skeletally regulates the tooth and jaw structure and reduces the need for orthodontics at later ages and shortens its duration. These are done with the help of various removable appliances or transparent plates. We strongly recommend that an orthodontic examination be performed, especially at the age of 7-8 years when mixed dentition is present.
In summary, child dental health is seriously related to child development and general systemic health. Just as routine pediatrician, ophthalmologist etc. if the controls are made routinely; the same sensitivity is not shown for dental controls.
